NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is India’s national-level entrance
examination for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate medical and dental courses such as
MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, and BSc Nursing in government and private institutions
across the country.
Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), NEET is the only medical entrance
exam for admission into medical colleges approved by the National Medical Commission
(NMC) and Dental Council of India (DCI).
• Students who have completed or are appearing for Class 12 (Science stream)
with subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology.
• Must be at least 17 years old at the time of admission.
• Mode: Offline (pen & paper-based)
• Duration: 3 hours 20 minutes
• Subjects Covered:
• Physics – 50 questions
• Chemistry – 50 questions
• Biology (Botany + Zoology) – 100 questions
• Total Marks: 720
• It ensures transparency, fairness, and merit-based selection.
• NEET is mandatory for admission to all government and private medical colleges in India.
• Also required for admission to AIIMS, JIPMER, and abroad MBBS programs.
• MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery)
• BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)
• AYUSH courses (BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, etc.)
• BSc Nursing (in select institutions)
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has been made mandatory by the Government of India for several important reasons:
1. Uniformity Across India
NEET provides a single, standardized exam for admission into all medical colleges in
India—whether government, private, deemed universities, or minority institutions. This
ensures equal opportunity for students from all states.
2. Merit-Based Selection
With NEET, medical admissions are purely based on merit, reducing unfair practices,
donations, or influence. The best and most deserving candidates secure seats.
3. Eliminates Multiple Entrance Exams
Before NEET, students had to write multiple entrance exams for different colleges or states.
NEET reduces stress, time, and financial burden by offering one exam for all institutions.
4. Ensures Transparency
NEET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) with strict protocols. This ensures
fairness, transparency, and integrity in the admission process.
5. Mandatory for Studying Abroad
From 2019 onwards, NEET is also mandatory for Indian students who want to pursue MBBS
abroad and later practice in India. This ensures a minimum level of academic quality.
6. Supreme Court Backing
The Supreme Court of India has upheld NEET as essential for curbing malpractices in
medical admissions and for maintaining high standards in medical education.
In summary, NEET is not just an entrance test—it’s a gateway to fairness, quality, and
national integrity in medical education.
1. Biology – The Core of Medicine
Biology is the heart of medical science. It helps students understand:
• Human anatomy and physiology (how the body works)
• Diseases, infections, and immunity
• Genetics and heredity
• Microorganisms and cell biology
Doctors deal with the human body every day—biology is what teaches them how it
functions and what happens when things go wrong.
2. Chemistry – The Science of Medicine
Chemistry is essential to understand:
• Biochemical reactions in the body (digestion, respiration, metabolism)
• Medicines and drug formulations
• How different chemicals affect the body (pharmacology)
• Blood chemistry, pH levels, and lab analysis
Without chemistry, a doctor cannot understand how medicines work or how to prescribe
treatment safely and effectively.
3. Physics – Understanding the Body & Technology
Physics helps in:
• Understanding the mechanics of the body (movement, blood flow, pressure)
• Medical technology like X-rays, ECGs, MRI scans, ultrasound
• Laws of energy, motion, waves, and optics — used in diagnostics and
equipment
Every modern doctor relies on medical instruments and machines. Physics helps them
understand and use this technology correctly.
NEET includes these three subjects because
• A future doctor must have a strong foundation in all three to become skilled
and safe.
• It ensures that students are academically prepared for the challenges of a
medical degree (MBBS, BDS, etc.).
• These subjects are the building blocks of all medical studies—from first-year
textbooks to clinical practice.
Final Thought
Physics + Chemistry + Biology = A Competent Doctor
By mastering these three subjects, students are not just preparing for an entrance exam—they
are preparing to save lives.
The NEET Physics syllabus is based on the NCERT Class 11 and 12 curriculum, and includes both conceptual understanding and numerical problem-solving.
